Sony DSC W90 Digital Camera

Sony DSC W90 is an 8.1 megapixel point and shoot camera that offers a higher resolution. With a 3x optical zoom lens that is normally found in many models of this class, this Sony DSC W90 does possess some other similar features too.

Design

It’s slim metal body measures less than 0.9 inches thick and weighs around 124 grams, including the memory stick duo and battery making it light enough to carry for all those memorable occasions.

Controls

The control placement is good. But the buttons are pretty hard to push. They are small in size and can pose a bit of a problem for people with large hands.

Key features

The 8 megapixel camera uses a 35mm-105mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, which are equivalent, f/2.8-5.2 lens, giving it 3x optical zoom range. Its 2.5 inch LCD is very good, plus there is also ample room for optical viewfinder to fit in. There is a 9 point auto focus system and a face detection system. Along with this, 31 megabytes of internal memory is also included in Sony DSC W90 digital camera.

User Friendly Aspects

Sony DSC W90 digital camera offers you variety of choices, with respect to your photos. You can rotate it, crop it and even remove red eyes from your pictures. Soft focus, fisheye, and cross filter are the other included effects.

Performance

It takes it first shot after 1.7 seconds. After that every shot is taken after an interval of 1.3 seconds. The time interval increases to 3 seconds after the flash is turned on. The Sony DSC W90 digital camera’s photos look good. Details have good clarity and are crisp too. Noise will show up at ISO 400 and images will become unprintable at ISO 3200.

Conclusion

The Sony DSC W90 digital camera makes a nice choice for anyone who wants to get a camera and start shooting.

HDCP – The Worst HDTV Consumer Nightmare, or the Best Digital Content Protection?

Why HDCP?

As far as the content industry is concerned, all channels of distribution – whether it be through over-the-air signals, Blu-ray or HD DVD, and cable and satellite HDTV, need to be secured.

Now, digital HD content delivered though DVI and HDMI represents the highest quality video available today. While great for the end-customer, it’s also great for counterfeiters who can use DVI and HDMI connections to get at a perfect video signal.

This is the background to the birth of High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection – also referred to as HDCP.

HDCP is based on a three-stage – authentication, encryption, and key revocation – process, to control video transmission and delivery up to the very end of the video display process.

Technically speaking, HDCP is pure content protection, not copy protection; restrictions on copying, sharing, etc., will have to be handled by other process in the signal chain e.g. cable and satellite TV boxes, high definition DVD players, etc. What High-bandwidth digital content protection does is simply guarantees that whatever content restrictions are in place, these are enforced by authenticating both the transmitter and the receiver.

HDCP Requirements for inter-operability

An HDCP source requires an HDCP-compliant DVI or HDMI receiver for it to allow the transmission of high definition content. What’s more, all active components in the HDTV connectivity chain must be HDCP compliant; otherwise you would not be able to enjoy high definition content.

You may think that it is still possible to continue enjoying high definition content in the way you have done so far – even if your ‘old’ HDTV is non-HDCP compliant, but…

It is true that most of to-day high definition boxes still support full high-definition through component video, but to prevent pirates from creating high resolution copies, the HDCP standard bans compliant products from converting HDCP-protected content to full-resolution analog form – unless specifically allowed for by the content provider.

What does this mean?

Connecting an HDCP source e.g. a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player, to a non-complaint receiver will – at best – force the source device to down-convert the video resolution through analog outputs to close to standard DVD quality; in a similar manner, DVD-Audio content is restricted to DAT quality on non-HDCP compliant digital audio outputs. At worst – what you get is just a blank output!

In other words, if you want to be certain that you will always be in a position to enjoy the benefits of full resolution high definition content on your television or monitor, your display device needs HDCP support.

Why did HDCP turn out to be the greatest ‘nightmare’ for early adopters of HDTV?

Being HDCP implies the utilization of a digital interface – in particular, the use of DVI and HDMI inputs and outputs. At the same time, a DVI or HDMI interface does not necessarily imply HDCP compatibility. Many major manufactures have come up during the early years of DVI and HDMI, with products that are not HDCP compliant.

Partly, the reason behind this anomaly is that up to very recent, HDCP was not a requirement. In fact, this digital content protection protocol was adopted by the FCC almost a year after we had started to see the first HDMI-enabled devices on stores shelves, and at a time when DVI had already been around for a number of years.

To a certain extent, this situation has transformed itself into one of the major problems many early adopters of HDTV are facing today – these have ended up paying top-dollar for the first HDTVs to hit the market. Those TVs are truly capable of displaying full high-definition content but they lack the HDCP-compliant HDMI (or DVI) inputs necessary to digitally interface with the latest generation of high definition devices such as HD-DVD and Blu-ray movie players.

The end result is that it would not be possible to watch high definition content on these HDTV sets. At best, what you will get is a down-converted version of the high definition image via the component video out that is a quarter of the 1920×1080 resolution offered by maximum HD.

This down-converting of the image over the analog outputs is enforced by a special digital flag – Image Constraint Token (ICT) – within the digital rights management standard; it is used to protect movies from unauthorized duplication. The decision to set this flag to restrict the output via the players or set-top box video component output is left to the studio or content provider, who can choose to implement ICT on a disc-by-disc or content-by-content basis.

Fortunately, there is some sort of silver lining to this cloud of confusion. Content providers are aware of the difficulties that surround the implementation of HDCP with respect to the present consumer electronics base. In an attempt to show some willingness to meet these consumers – half way – till they upgrade their HDTV gear, some studios have publicly indicated that they would not enforce analog down conversion. Sony Pictures Entertainment has publicly stated that its Blu-ray discs will not carry the ICT; some other studios have indicated that they will follow suit. This means that at least, some of the first Blu-ray discs will be viewable at full high-definition resolution for all HDTV owners. In a similar manner, Universal Studios has indicated that for the time being, they won’t down-sample content on their HD-DVD discs.

Be aware however, that not all content providers will follow on the footsteps of Sony and Universal. For example, Warner Pictures – a proponent of ICT – has signaled that it will implement down-conversion on ‘at least’ some of its initial HD-DVD discs. Further more, those studios that will not implement ICT, are under no obligation to maintain their present position indefinitely, so do not be surprised to see ICT implemented across-the-board within a few years time – especially once the present format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is over, and equally important, once the penetration of compliant HDTV sets reaches the right level.

The Bottom Line

We believe that owners of non-compliant HDTVs would still be able to get several more years of enjoyment from their sets – in other words, there is no need to rush and upgrade. This means that you may take all your time to plan your HDTV upgrade but…

Be warned that requirements such as ICT and plans for new devices that will output only via an HDCP/HDMI port, may eventually turn your old HDTV a useless resource! If in the process, you would not manage to upgrade your gear, you may end up with a HDTV set that would be useless when it comes to watching HD content!

(For more information on how this content protection process operates, as well as on related HDCP compliance issues, please visit http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/hdcp.html).

Blu-Ray Reviews Of The Sony BDP-S300 Multi-Region Blu-Ray Disc Player

Blu-Ray Disc Player: Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI output. Right off the bat everyone in the room noticed the image quality from the Blu-Ray Disc Player S300, it’s always comforting when the results right out of the box are at least on par with expectations, surpassing them is of course a nice bonus.

The SONY BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player is an important product, giving Blu-ray some much needed traction in the affordable player category. Combine that with recent news from rental powerhouse Blockbuster that it is expanding Blu-ray titles in its stores (at the expense of HD DVD in most cases), and the BDP-S300 looks like a no-brainer.

HQV Benchmark Results: The BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player scored very well with the standard definition HQV benchmark disc, it passed most of the tests with flying colors and was able to lock onto the 3:2 film cadence test faster than many other of the DVD and BD/HD players tested recently.

o Color Bar/Vertical Detail: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Jaggies Pattern 1: Pass – Score 5 of 5

o Jaggies Pattern 2: Pass – Score 3 of 5

o Flag: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Picture Detail: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Noise Reduction: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Motion Adaptive Noise Reduction: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o 3:2 Detection: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Film Cadence: Pass – Score (Combined) 40 of 40

o Mixed 3:2 Film, Horizontal Text Crawl: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Mixed 3:2 Film, Vertical Text Crawl: Pass – Score 10 of 10

o Total Score: 128 out of a possible 130.

And the remote is a good one- it controls both the player and a television.

Unlike Sony‘s first-gen BDP-S1 (and Pioneer Elite’s BDP-HD1) the BDP-S300 will play back CDs, either from its analog audio outputs or any of its digital audio outputs, including HDMI.

Once loaded and running, the BDP-S300 performed like a gold medalist. The best Blu-ray Discs looked sensational at either 1080p/60 or 1080p/24. And for those using 720p displays, or displays that will not accept 1080p inputs, the player also performed beautifully when set for either a 720p or 1080i output.

The Sony BDP-S300 Multi-Region Blu-Ray is a sure winner

The Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player is a good one, with superb playback quality from Blu-ray Discs, and solid upconversion of standard definition DVDs for your legacy collection.

Description: Everyone will marvel at the stunning sound and picture quality of this second-generation Blu-ray Disc player. With remarkable features and versatile performance, the BDP-S300 is an amazing value.

BDP-S300 Strengths: Picture Quality

Strengths: Great picture and excellent sound

Weaknesses: None for me

Summary: I bought this Blu-Ray player last July to watch movies and it has worked flawlessly for me from day 1. I am not a viewer who will use picture in picture (which this does not have) nor do I play any of the games which are on some of the discs. I wanted a Blu-Ray player which gives me full HD video and great sound. The audio sounds great on my surround sound system when I use it. Sometimes I just use the TV speakers and the audio is excellent. If you are interested in a Blu-Ray player with outstanding video and excellent sound this player is for you.

Strengths: Plays Blu-Ray Discs, upconverts standard DVDs. Full 1080p output. Good array of audio outputs.

Strengths: Great picture when playing Blu ray Disk. Connected all audio connections at once except Coax, and all worked automatically…Great sound.

While the Sony BDP-S300 is an entry level Blu-ray player, entry level doesn’t necessarily mean cheap. You’re getting a capable high definition video player. VD’s is lackluster at best and it only decodes Dolby Digital Plus. If you already have a capable upconverting DVD player and don’t care about the decoding of Dolby TrueHD and the myriad of high definition DTS formats, this may be the Blu-ray player for you.

Summary: Sony has finally come out their second generation Blu-ray player at half the original price of the original! The BDP-S300 looks like a bargain compared to their previous BDP-S1 model.

Besides the cost benefit, you get more with this player. Unlike the previous model the S300 can play CDs in addition to DVDs. In addition, it seems to load slightly faster than the previous model.

All in all, the BDP-S300 delivers what it promises.

The new BDP-S300 model can output 1920 x 1080p (progressive) high-definition video, currently the highest resolution high-definition signal available through an HDMI(TM) connection. The player supports various video formats, including MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1.

For those who own an HDTV set without HDMI, an analog component output for 1080i (interlaced) is available as well.

The new BD player is compatible with most standard DVDs and has the added feature of 1080p upscaling through HDMI to 1080p capable HDTVs, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.

Watching PIRATES I and PIRATES II I found the picture striking and vivid with no artifacts. My receiver is a delivers 5.1 DD so I am unable to take advantage of the uncompressed PCM codec. However, the Dolby digital audio track was quite impressive. All things considered, this an excellent player at a very good price.

This is an excellent BD Player for under $500! The picture quality is awesome!

Excellent upscaler quality for DVD movies

Below is mentioned that it can’t be made region free. Only partially true. A California company already sells this model in a Multiregion (multi-region) version. It can play any Region A and B Blu-Ray Disc movie and display it on any TV that has HDMI input, regardless of video standard (PAL-SECAM-NTSC etc.)

This is a unit that we would buy for ourselves if it weren’t for the fact that we couldn’t make it region free, because we have a huge DVD collection with movies from regions 1 and 4. If you are going to play only region-free (“region 0″) or region 1 discs then this unit is a great pick, especially because its cost/benefit ratio: great price and excellent image quality for DVDs – if the relative slowness of this unit doesn’t bother you.

I haven’t gone through all the bells and whistles yet, but the picture quality just floored me. Even my wife who really doesn’t get the whole ‘high def thing’ was greatly impressed. We watched Pirates/Caribbean 2 and couldn’t believe the quality.

Pros: Excellent picture quality, inexpensive for a Blu-ray player, offers HDMI upscaling to 1080p

Anyone looking to experience the formidable pleasures of watching movies on Blu-ray Disc, and at a reasonable startup cost, is advised to check out Sony‘s BDP-S300.

This is a magnificent Blu-ray DVD player. It enhances regular DVD viewing and presents Blu-ray discs in full 1080p (if you have a 1080p HDTV).

The video and sound quality is amazing!

Very good product for the money. Well worth getting if you want to get the best picture from your large widescreen HDTV.

“I have owned this Blu-ray player about 2 weeks. I purchased my first Blu-ray movie this past weekend and I was blown away by the full 1080p picture that it produces and the full digital sound is awesome. Be sure to purchase an hdmi cable for this player and you will not be disappointed. It will also upconvert standard DVD’s to near HD quality.”

Have this unit for a week and love it. Bought it for my husband from appliance bestbuys the price was great the units great and I would definitely tell everyone to buy this one if they want a good Blu ray without emptying their wallets.

Holiday Travel That Keeps the Family Safe, The Kids Occupied and the Adults Sane

To combat the rising airline prices, it is estimated that a larger number of Americans will choose to travel by automobile this holiday season than by airplane. This being true, it is vitally important that vehicle in which you intend to travel is thoroughly checked out. A qualified mechanic is more than capable of handling this for you especially today with the emergence of so much electronic equipment that can diagnose major issues at the first sign of trouble.

A simple way to ensure your safety is to have your dealership inspect the vehicle and provide you with a report about what needs to be done. Be very careful because if you let the dealer repair any item on your car it is the equivalent to committing financial suicide. So don’t do that. Instead, take the report they give you to the nearest auto parts store and purchase your parts. Next go to the neighborhood mechanic and have them do it on the cheap.

Now that your are traveling in safety and in style, your next step is to find some way of keeping those beautiful little darling children of yours occupied. In today’s modern world, there is no greater way to do this than with computer games, personal dvd players, and a good book. From Macmall to the Sony Playstation, there is no limit to the many variety of gaming systems you can purchase for your long ride to the grandparents house. Now, you may be thinking to yourself why on earth would my kids read a book when they have all of these other electronic devices there to distract them. The answer is quite simple. Rather than bringing along a traditional book, modern technology has afforded us something called audio books. These books are read electronically to your children as they sit and follow along.

In addition, there is no need to worry about anything inappropriate showing up on your child’s video game or DVD movie because advances in computer security assures you of knowing that whatever your child watches will be monitored. They will be so tired of all the excitement; you can expect them to fall fast asleep with no fuss. The important thing to do when this happens is quickly pull the car over and take a quick photo or video of them sleeping. This will serve as a reminder of how wonderful they are when they are screaming about being hungry or having to go to the bathroom.

Well, the car is safe and the kids are quiet what about you. To maintain your sanity from the “are we there yet question”, before heading out on your journey you should pickup a Tom Tom navigational device. Oh sure the first hour or so of the trip is delightful that is until everyone in the car begins to question your judgment about your sense of direction. With a hand-held or car mounted navigation device, you will never have to entertain those doubts again.

As you set out this year with your family, be sure to follow the simple steps above to protect your family, occupy your children and maintain your sanity. You will be so glad you did.

Sony Ericsson W580i Vs Sony Ericsson S500i

Often enough, slide phones can appear to be similar to one another in so many ways unless they are distinguished by, say, an angled slide or something of that like. Both the Sony Ericsson W580i, and the Sony Ericsson S500i are, exterior only, very similar models. In fact, it strongly seems as if they are the same mobile phone merely with different covers on the outside. Of course, the ‘code’ used in the initials of the serial numbers provide a hint as to the nature of both mobile phone types.

Overall, the Sony Ericsson W580i has swathes of similarities with the Sony Ericsson S500i, but at the same time it is the very same distinguishing features that set both these mobile phones apart that come to the fore during comparisons. Perhaps it is a small indication of just how distinct even the most similar looking of mobile phones could actually be.

Comparing Features of the Sony Ericsson W580i and Sony Ericsson S500i

Looking first at the Sony Ericsson W580i, that is essentially a Walkman mobile phone. One of the heaviest expectations placed on Walkman branded mobile phones is the quality of the sound and also the media player, and the Sony Ericsson W580i does not disappoint. Instead, by utilising the Walkman 2.0 music player, it provides a genuine pleasure of a musical experience, complete with ‘shake control’.

On the other hand, the Sony Ericsson S500i takes a totally different route by exploring the brave new world of configurable themes. Not only does it offer up the luxury of choice, but the Sony Ericsson S500i does so in such a way that refusing would honestly be pretty hard. Combining this already beautiful mobile phone with the easy on the eyes configurable themes, there is no limit to the heights that can be attained as new levels of beauty on mobile phones are sought out.

Camera-wise and display wise, both mobile phones are rather similar, however the Sony Ericsson W580i does offer a few extras such as a pedometer that the Sony Ericsson S500i does not have. Although it could probably be viewed as a fairly cosmetic difference, the entire effect that the Sony Ericsson W580i produces can only seem to be matched by the jaw-dropping brilliance of the beauty within the S500i.

As a mobile phone, the S500i is one that shows the most promise of being the most attractive, and certainly, most flexibly attractive, mobile phone ever. On the other hand, the Walkman W580i provides excellent music quality combined with a few extras that can make for good fun to fiddle around. In terms of their comparison, there is no clear ‘winner’, although if one must be picked, it should probably be the S500i for the type of ground-breaking differences that it has implemented in its design.

Style is such an important part of the world of mobile phones, and having a mobile phone so dedicated to style is truly remarkable.
